Portraits of Hope

A global artistic movement honoring political prisoners from Russia and Ukraine

about

Turning art into advocacy

Portraits of Hope is a global art initiative uniting artists from around the world to honor political prisoners, Russians and Ukrainians imprisoned for speaking the truth, defending freedom, or opposing war and repression. Each portrait restores a name, a story, and a face to those whom authoritarian regimes seek to silence.

The project is an initiative of People for Free Russia, a newly formed coalition uniting activists in the United States and abroad.

Beyond remembrance, the project transforms compassion into tangible support. One of its core goals is to raise funds for urgent medical needs of imprisoned individuals, helping provide treatment, medications, and essential care that is often denied behind bars.

Through exhibitions in museums, universities, and community spaces, we connect artists, audiences, and advocates across borders to amplify awareness and deliver meaningful support to those still behind prison walls.

We are seeking venues to host Portraits of Hope, including one-day exhibitions, and welcome collaborations with universities, galleries, museums, community groups, and independent hosts, with the option to pair events with letter-writing evenings for political prisoners.

We also welcome fundraising support, volunteers, and organizers, and invite anyone interested in hosting, organizing, or supporting the project to get in touch.
